Is Islamic slaughtering cruel to animals?

Islam's stance on what is permissible to eat and what is not is clear. There are strict rules when it comes to meat regarding what is allowed and what is forbidden. In Surat Al-Maida (The Table) Allah says: "Forbidden to you (for food) are: AI-Maytatah (the dead animals -cattle-beasts not slaughtered), blood, the flesh of swine, and the meat of that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah or has been slaughtered for idols etc, or on which Allah's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering and that which has been killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a headlong fall or by the goring of horns - and that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal - unless you are able to slaughter it(before its death) and that which is sacrificed (slaughtered) on AnNusub (stone altars). What is meant by udhiyah (sacrifice)? Is it obligatory or Sunnah?

  Definition of Udhiyah The word  udhiyah  means an animal of the  an’aam  class (i.e., camel, cow, sheep, or goat) that is slaughtered during the days of Eid al-Adha because of the ‘Eid and as an act of worship, intending to draw closer to Allah thereby.  This is one of the rituals of Islam prescribed in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and according to the consensus of the Muslims.  Reference to Udhiyah in the Quran and the Sunnah In the Quran,  Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):  “Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only).” [Al-Kawthar 108:2]  “Say (O Muhammad): Verily, my Salaah (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists). He has no partner. And of this, I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims.”  [Al-An'am 6:162] The word  nusuk  (translated here as a sacrifice) means sacrifice; this is th
